Basic tutorial on photoshop CS3 animation techniques

This tutorial touches on a few of the basic animation tools that you can combine to create some pretty powerful animations in Photoshop. Photoshop allows the creation of basic frame animation and provides some tools to help cut the tedium out of the process. The animation bar can be opened by accessing the WINDOW pull-down menu and selection ANIMATION and place the ANIMATION bar where you are comfortable. Your screen would look something like this.

One frame of animation will be visible. To make a new frame select the DUPLICATE FRAME tool as indicated by the arrow. I selected the second animation frame (active frame has blue border) and then in the image, I moved the red box from one corner of the screen to the other. Now you can see the red box in two different locations in each of the animation frames. If you click the PLAY button (triangle) in the animation button, you will see the box jump from one corner to the next.

Since I want the box to move instead of jump, I need frames showing the box between the beginning and ending locations. I do not have to manually make these frames. I selected the TWEEN tool (indicated by the arrow) and a dialog box opens. Since the first animation frame is active, I selected "TWEEN WITH NEXT FRAME" (If the second frame was active, I could change this to "TWEEN WITH PREVIOUS FRAME" and get the same result.). The dialog box allows us to have the tween show changes to all layers or just the current layer and you can select what effects to tween. You can also increase or decrease the number of frames to be created and this will change the smoothness of the animation.

Category Adobe Photoshop - Animation, Text effects, etc.,

You can create a variety of fascinating text effects in Photoshop. The best part is that text effects are easy to create. You can use the different tools that come with Photoshop to create your effects. In Part I of this tutorial we propose to show you how to create a text layer, how to use some of the tools to create text effects and how to animate texts using ImageReady, the companion application of Photoshop.

Step 1

If you are ready, let’s begin. Open Photoshop and set up a canvas of the size 500 x 500 pixels.

Step 2

A square canvas in fact. Paint the background black with paint bucket.

Step 3

Custom RSS Feed Icons

there’s one thing that I am a big proponent of it is customization…just take a look at my theme! I took the Milk-It Theme that was popularized by one of the better-known Making Money Online gurus and spun it into something of my own creation. I took that same approach when I created the RSS Feed Icon for the site. I didn’t want something that looked like it was pulled off the shelf and slapped on the site…I wanted something that was custom that carried the design of GrandmasterB. So, how did I do it? Well, I’m not a magician so I guess I am going to let this little secret out of the bag. I took the great source files from Feed Icons and morphed it into something of my own.

I’m going to show you two ways to make your Feed Icons custom. What you will need for this tutorial:

BASIC CUSTOMIZATION

Unzip the Dev Kit and take a look inside, there are multiple sizes of the default orange and white rss feed icon as well as a folder full of grayscale versions. For this part of the tutorial go ahead and open one of the grayscale versions; I have opened the 128 x 128 pixel version (feed-icon-128×128.psd) in Photoshop.
To add some color to this icon and make it your own will take you literally one step. It’s not flashy and is very simple, but it is customized to your liking and that’s what counts.

STEP ONE (and only one) - Add Some Color

Simply go to the layers palette and click on “Add Layer Style” and choose Color Overlay. Change your Blend Mode to “Color” and choose a color to your liking that is “web safe”. Once you’ve got it click OK and you’ve just customized your RSS Feed Icon. Of course when you’ve finished be sure to “Save for Web” in the format of your choice.

As I stated this is very basic customization of the feed icon and doesn’t use a much (if any) creativity. So, how do you make something completely unique similar to the GrandmasterB Feed Icon…lemme show ya.

Discover Color Fill

Make a selection of the simplest area to select (in this case the sky) with the magic wand tool. We are soon going to cut the sky out of the background and put a new background behind the cactus.

Duplicate the original background layer (as I always teach) by dragging it to the new layer icon as shown. You want to keep an original of the image so you can come back to (in case of emergency) for G.P.

Here I've dragged (drug, drugged?) another copy to the new layer icon to retain an original and to fill this layer with a color in the next step.

You can also just click on the new layer icon itself but remember that it will create a new blank layer above whatever layer is currently selected in the layers palette so you will have to select the background layer first (or you can move the layer order afterwards).
Edit: Fill is one way you can fill. Take note of what layer you want to fill and make sure that is the one that is selected in the layers palette.

Now select the layer you want to cut the background out of ( in the layers palette).

You may have to re-select the background with the magic wand tool (in this case). Edit: Cut to get rid of the selected area (the blue sky). Note how the cactus is left on its own.

You have cut or erased the pixels you selected on that layer. This is basic stuff you must understand before you can move on to really cool stuff, oh apprentice.

The paint bucket is another way you can ‘fill' a layer with a color.

Choose a color from the color or swatches palette (the eyedropper will automatically appear).

This will now be the selected color that appears in the foreground color chooser in the bottom of the toolbar. Make sure you are on the proper layer in the layers palette that you are going to fill and get rid of anything else that is there.

Choose the paint bucket and click it to fill the layer with the color. You can also use Alt/Opt backspace to fill with the foreground color.

You can also choose pattern fill from the options bar or from the Edit: Fill menu.

Just click and the entire layer (or selection) will fill with the pattern you've chosen.

These are all covered in Basic Photoshop Training DVD tutorials. What we're doing here is creating a new background for the cactus. For example purposes, you should understand the practical use of these concepts. In the next tutorial we'll make it a little prettier or more natural.

Discover the Crop tool for Image Editing

The crop tool is a tool that any beginning Photoshop user (and advanced) should definitely know how to use.

This is basic image editing at it's pure essentials. When I was learning (teaching myself) I didn't use the crop tool, I used the method of marquee and then copy/cut and paste onto a new file.

Crop tool makes the whole process a snap.

Grab the crop tool and just drag it across the image so you have a general marquee selection around the area that you'd like to keep.

You'll notice how it darkens everything else? This is because that is the area that you're going to get rid of.

Adjust the corner handles (hold down shift to retain proportion for the corner handles) to cover the area that you'd like to keep.

Then press enter. The whole document now becomes this new size (remember the Info palette that shows the measurements of the bounding box? Now's a great time to use it if you need an exact cut).

See how much more interesting the photo is once you get rid of all that extra space (even a lot of MY photos could use a little cropping)?! It focuses the whole image nicely on the hired for photography family.

Keep in mind that once you do the crop, this is the new file size unless you go back in the history palette to redo it. You can always Save As and name it something else to retain a copy of the original still in your hard drive).

Or you can Save As and save it in a different format with the same name to save a copy and retain the original pre-cropped. If you know you're going to keep the cropped version as the master then just Save (override the previous version of the file) to retain your new state of the document.

Design a Cool Music Wallpaper

This tutorial will teach you how to create a cool music themed wallpaper. It will utilize many basic techniques, and some more complex ones to produce an interesting outcome. The final wallpaper is available to download.

Final Image:

This is what the final image looks like. You can download the full-sized wallpaper for free here.

Step 1

Open a new document, I chose the dimensions 1280X800px. Paste in your photo of musical notation onto a new layer to use as the basis for your background. Use the transform tool to resize the photo to fit nicely on your canvas.

Step 2

Now go to image > adjustments > desaturate to grayscale your image. Go to brightness/contrast settings and reduce the layers brightness to -40, and increase the contrast to +50.

Step 3

Select the radial gradient tool and specify a gradient going from 100% black to 0% light gray. Then drag the gradient from the bottom left of your image to achieve the effect below:

Step 4

Next paste your abstract image of musical notes onto a new layer. Use the transform tool to resize the image until it looks good. Then change this layers blending mode to ‘multiply’. The parts of your original background image not concealed by the radial gradient should show through and create an eerie lighting effect.

Step 5

Open your photo of the man with headphones.
